Each time I sit at the wheel I always try to center myself as well as the clay. If both are in agreement, the clay can be molded into a 'desired shape' or 'guided' in a way that reveals the vessel it wishes to become.
At times 'something happens' in the process of throwing that yields the possibility of a new expression and the result is an alteration in form. Like improvisation in music, the performer must be ready for a new direction.
Giving shape to the new piece whether by trimming or carving can be the most challenging and satisfying. Each piece has something unique to show and it is a collaboration of sorts that allows that special something to result.
But it is the magic and mystery of the fire and smoke that I guess fascinates me the most. Patterns, accents, changes in colors, highlights, the unexpected all are possible when I lift the lid to that sawdust kiln and wipe away the ashes.
Somehow the process never gets old. Start to finish it is you and the clay taking a journey together.
